FAQs

What is expected of team members?

Commitment to consistently attend training.

How you behave reflects on the team, all its members and our sponsors. So both in training and outside training we do our best to stay positive

Stay respectful.

Trust the process.

Practice a high level of communication with team mates and coaches.

Practice good trail etiquette, giving right of way to others and saying “hi, thanks, have a good day” to everyone we pass.

When you mess up, own it, apologize and clean up your mess.

Keep bikes clean and tuned up.

Keep things fun.  TRIBE is a “No Drama Zone”. This means don’t stir up trouble by talking behind people’s back.

Be coachable, meaning receive feedback when given, be curious and give your best to assigned workouts.

All athletes wear team kits to training and races outside NICA races.

Support our sponsors via social media tags and mentions as well as prioritizing them when you purchase gear.

Volunteer at Bogus Hill Climb and TRIBE street clean up days. (Boise based athletes only)

If these expectations aren’t met you may be dismissed from the team without a refund.

What does it take to move from Devo to National?

Devopart time squad are finishing top 25 in their 6-8th grade NICA races. Devo Full time are placing top 10 in their Freshman or JV1 races and should be working towards their cat 2 USAC license. National are landing podium spots in 8th, 9th, JV1 or Top 10 varsity in their high school series. National athletes should be Cat 1 USAC license holders.

Do I have to be at all practices to be on the team?

No. We understand some athletes have jobs, big tests, youth group etc. We would expect athletes to be at 75%+ of training days and to note their availability on team snap app. If you expect to be available less than 75% of the time you may still apply but will require a conversation w head coach to make sure your goals reflect your availability to train.

How will you keep the athletes safe?

Athletes are required to always have a helmet on if their leg is over a bike. We do a quick bike check before each practice. A. B. C. D. E. Air. Brakes. Chain. Deraileur. Everything else. Our coaches are all background checked and SafeSport (child abuse) trained or the NICA equivalent. Coaches will ride with a basic first aid kit to tend any crashes. We are concussion trained and will follow guidelines before allowing athletes back to practice if indeed there is a concussion. TRIBE LLC has liability insurance in tact. Accidents do happen and cycling is an inherently dangerous sport but we will always remind athletes to ride within their own limits.

Will TRIBE provide rides to races/events?

Athletes will only be transported from event housing to venue as part of our housing/food event service of $100/day.. TRIBE does not have capacity nor insurance to provide rides outside of these parameters.

How does race housing/food work?

National athletes may sign up for housing/food support at $100/day. An airbnb will be rented near race course and food will be provided to allow athletes to travel without their parents. Space will be limited and couches may used. National Elite athletes get first dibs.

Do athletes pay for their races?

Athletes cover their own race entry fees, travel, food and lodging, unless utilizing the National team Housing/food support.

How do we deal with monthly payments?

Athletes must stay up to date on dues.  The fees are due the first of each month and can be paid via Venmo @TRIBE-Boise. Event support fees are due Nov 1/April 1splitting the fee into two equal payments.

Is there any multi athlete discount?

There are not multi-athlete discounts. Although, there is a $500 scholarship for those that make the Elite squad.

How do we deal with Kit/Event Fee payments?

Kit and event fees being a larger chunk may be paid all up front or broken into 2 payments on Oct 5, November 1 and April 1st and can be paid Venmo @TRIBE-Boise.

What kind of commitment is required?

A 12 month commitment is required. November to November. It takes an entire year to work through our plan to get you the maximum results. Devo Part Time athletes require a 6 month commitment and may enter Nov 1 or April 1.

Are we going to ride any roads?

Yes. Road riding is great for getting faster. In most cases we will ride roads on the way to gravel. In other cases we will ride up bogus basin road, Hill road, Dump Loop and Willow Creek/Pearl. But our primary surface will be dirt from Camel’s Back Park.

Which TRIBE team is best for me?

TRIBE DEVO part time is for those who only have a year or two of race experience, are 6-8th graders and perhaps play multiple sports but want to stay in cycling shape throughout the year and train with a team.  This team will put in 6-8 hrs of training per week focussing on increasing their volume and has the main objective of being competitive during the NICA season. You may be invited to move up to the DEVO squad during the year if your fitness and schedule allow.

TRIBE DEVO Team is for those who want to test themselves against the best in the Region and are willing and able to invest 10-12/wk to be competitive at that level. This squad may not want to travel as much or may still be racing at the Cat 2/3 level.

National Team is for those who are already one of the best in the region and are ready to test themselves against the best in the Nation. These athlete are willing and able to invest what it takes to be competitive at that level. Goal of competing in U.S. Nationals. Able to invest 12-17 hrs per week training. This team races in Cat 1 13/14 & 15/16 or UCI 17/18 U23.

What’s the difference between Feedback and Personal coaching?

FeedbackCoaching was coined by Kristin Armstrong and the KX3 coaching to describe a training peaks comments based form of communication that occurs twice per week. When you finish workouts and comment on how it went your feedback coach will read those comments and suggest adjustments, give encouragement, answer questions etc. If you are going on vaca and need adjustments that will be communicated to your TRIBE coach. KX3 feedback coaches don’t make changes. If you choose KX3 feedback coaching your coach will be a pro female racer currently in the mix racing her bike. If you choose TRIBE feedback coaching you may choose from Coach Ben, Mike or Jason. Limitations of feedback coaching is communication is done solely over Training Peaks twice per week and with TRIBE coaches before during or after in person training.

Personal Coaching is probably what you imagine. You and your coach decide on a coach call plan, texting expectations and have a more fluid relationship to assess training, strategy, improvements and feedback. You have greater access to your coaches feedback. If seeking personal coach from KX3 you must fill out an intake form to help determine if you are ready for that level and which coach would be the best fit. If you decide on personal coaching from TRIBE you may choose from coach Ben, Mike or Jason.

I live out of state. How does the that work?

National level athletes will have the opportunity to connect with the other TRIBE athletes at team camp Presidents Day weekend in Feb. National and Devo level athletes will connect with the team at the USAC races we will be supporting and Fall camp in Idaho. We will utilize zoom for team education, sponsor clinics and get coaching through training peaks. You’ll may choose a TRIBE or KX3 coach you may contact whenever you have a question or adjustment that needs to be made to your training. We meet up at USAC races for pre-ride the day before the event then you are taken care of on race day with a tent, trainer, mechanical and feed/tech zone assistance. We also have a team dinner at each USPro Cup series race weekend and Nationals.

Kits will be mailed to you or brought to team camp along with bottles, T-shirt, hat etc. If you want swag mailed you will need to cover shipping. Bike and part orders can be done online through our sponsor George’s Cycles at 20% off and other sponsor orders may be direct and be delivered to your home.

We will also have accessories you may want to purchase like a vest, jacket etc. Your parents can even buy a jersey of their own … because you know they’ll be jealous. .

February Camp costs?

We do our best to keep costs down by grocery shopping and keeping the biking and the house amenities the main entertainment. Traditionally Team camp is around $1000/athlete plus travel. This covers housing, food & transportation from house to trailheads. Transportation from airport to team housing may be extra depending on location. There will also be a free all team camp in the Fall in Idaho if National athletes can’t swing the Feb camp.
